Adventure Shoot At Puako: Micah & Naomi's Engagement Session


On November 16, 2024, I had the joy of capturing Micah and Naomi in an unforgettable sunset session at Puako, a location brimming with diversity and adventure. Their dynamic energy and deep connection made this an experience to remember, and Puako offered the perfect backdrop with its scenic beaches, winding roads, and rolling hills.  


Micah and Naomi first crossed paths here on the Big Island, and their love story reflects the beauty and vibrancy of this place. While I can’t say exactly how long they’ve been together, their chemistry spoke volumes. Every moment felt like a testament to their friendship, love, and adventurous spirits.  


Why Puako?


Puako is a gem for anyone looking for a mix of breathtaking scenery. Its natural diversity—from secluded beaches and quiet roads to stunning hills overlooking the ocean—provides endless opportunities for unique and creative shots. I chose this location for its ability to tell a multi-faceted story in one session.  


We started on the beach, where the sweeping landscapes set the tone for lighthearted and romantic moments. Then we transitioned to a serene road surrounded by lush flora, creating an intimate and calm vibe. Finally, we ended on a hill with panoramic views of the ocean and Big Island’s majestic landscape, soaking in a vibrant sunset that made for dramatic, one-of-a-kind photos.  


Windy, but Wonderful  


The session took place during the evening, right before golden hour. While the weather was sunny, the wind was a force to be reckoned with. For many couples, strong wind might be a frustration, but not for Micah and Naomi. Instead of being discouraged, they embraced it, turning the wind into an asset.  


The gusts added movement and life to every frame, making their hair dance and the environment feel alive. It reminded me of how a couple’s attitude can make or break a session. When couples approach their shoot with a sense of fun and adaptability, the results are always incredible.  


Effortless


What stood out most about this session was how natural Micah and Naomi were together. Although I gave them a few cues for poses, they needed little direction. With just a nudge, they brought their own energy and creativity, transforming simple ideas into vibrant, heartfelt moments.  


Their choice of outfits—a classic combination of white shirts and denim—added a clean and timeless aesthetic to the session. I loved how it complemented the rugged beauty of Puako, blending simplicity with adventure.  


Memorable Moments


Every part of this shoot was special, but two moments stood out. The first was their easy laughter and connection. Micah and Naomi made me feel like I wasn’t just their photographer but a friend along for the ride. Their focus on each other rather than the camera allowed me to capture raw, authentic emotions.  


The second was the road shots. Quiet and surrounded by lush greenery, this spot was a creative departure from my usual ocean-focused sessions. It was refreshing to highlight the island’s land-based beauty and explore new approaches to storytelling.
